Our Expectations of Foster Parents
Meet the day to day needs of the child by providing:
- Food, shelter, and clothing;
- Patience, affection, and guidance;
- Structure, rules, and discipline;
- Advocacy for the educational needs of the child;
- Transportation including medical, physical, and mental health appointments; and
- Support for children through emotional, behavioral, medical, or developmental challenges that may result from the child's trauma due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, loss, or separation.
Work with the child’s team by:
- Participating in an icebreaker meeting with the child’s family to discuss the child;
- Valuing and helping maintain the child's connections with their siblings and extended family;
- Providing transportation for family visits; and
- Communicating with the child's caseworker, your certification worker, and other professionals, such as the Guardian ad Litem (GAL), court-appointed special advocate (CASA), therapists, and physicians.
Adoption Through Foster Care
Adams County is not an adoption agency, but we understand that many foster parents hope to grow their family through adopting a child. For many foster families, adoption through foster care is possible, but please understand that our goal is to reunify children with their family. If children in foster care are unable to return to their parents and a suitable kinship placement is not found, foster families may be asked to be the permanent family through adoption.
